2022 Occultations by Distant Solar System Objects - Updated 2022 September 21
An occultation of a 12.6-mag. star by Saturn's moon Hyperion will occur on Sept. 23 UT from Kansas to s. Calif., and Hawaii
The rare occultation by Titan the morning of July 9 was observed across North America
These occultations are described and illustrated in this .pdf document. It includes several hot links to external Web pages, but links to internal files, especially the .xml input files used by the Occult program, are given below. The .pdf document has NOT been updated for the 2022 July and September special events noted below. And to save space on the server where this page is hosted, some of the larger files for past occultations have been removed, so you will get broken links for them. If you want a file that is not available, we can send it to you upon request. _ _ _ _ _ 2022 SEPTEMBER 23 OCCULTATION OF 12.6-MAG. STAR BY HYPERION (SATURN VII) CLICK HERE for a special page with detailed predictions for the Sept. 23rd occultation of a 12.6mag. star by Hyperion (Saturn VII). The occultation will occur early in the 8th hour UT Sept. 23rd, visible from a path crossing the USA from Kansas to southern California, southern Hawaii Island, and a few equatorial Pacific islands farther west. It is a Lucky Star (Rio group) event; any observations should be reported to their portal, as noted on the Web page. _ _ _ _ _ 2022 SEPTEMBER 13 OCCULTATION OF 11.9-MAG. STAR BY THE URANUS SYSTEM CLICK HERE for a special page with detailed predictions for the Sept. 12/13 occultation of an 11.9mag. star by Uranus and by its rings. The occultation will occur from 4h to 7h UT Sept. 13 UT, visible from most of North America, the Caribbean, Central America, most of South America, and western Europe. It is a Lucky Star event; any observations should be reported to their portal, as noted on the Web page, which also has important recommendations for observing the event. Only a few recordings of this very difficult event were obtained and are being analyzed to see if any events by the Uranian rings, especiall epsilon, were detected. _ _ _ _ _ 2022 JULY 9 OCCULTATION OF 8.7-MAG. STAR BY TITAN CLICK HERE for a special page with detailed predictions for the July 9th occultation of an 8.7mag. star by Saturn's large moon Titan. This interactive Google Map shows the northern and southern limits (red lines) and the central line (green). Specify +100 and -100 for offset values above the map and two dark gray lines will be plotted, defining the area where a strong central flash most likely occurred. _ _ _ _ _ OCCULT INPUT .XML FILES FOR 2022 When you open these files with your Web browser, you should get a display that looks like this. The larger files may take a couple of minutes to show this appearance, showing a messed-up display before then. Once the proper view appears, right-click anywhere on the display, then "Save as" to a directory on your computer; the best directory is the \Asteroid\ subdirectory in your Occult\ directory.
