Occultation of 7.4-msg. SAO 98451 by Venus Fri. morning, 2023 Sept. 22 - New 2023 Sept. 9

This is the brightest occultation by a major planet in N. America in 2023, but visible only from Maine & the Atlantic Provinces at low altitude, with better visibility from part of e. Brazil and the Azores.

SAO 98451 = HIP 45363, spectral type K2. The best part of N. America to
see this will be Newfoundland and eastern Nova Scotia; Venus will be less
than 7 deg. high farther west. Bermuda is closer to the central line,
probably not enough to see a central flash, but the altitude will be only
5 deg. when the star reappears there. With Venus’ magnitude of -4.8, the
bright side disappearance can not be observed, but the star might be
observed when it reappears on the dark side of Venus’ disk, 36ʺ in diameter
and 30% sunlit. Occult maps, and Occult predictions for contact times and
circumstances for many cities, are given in the files linked to below.

giving the UT of the center of the occultation, and the star and Sun
altitudes at that time (they will be a little different when the
D and R occur, since the occultation duration will be up to 25 min.).
The data in this file are sorted by the city distance from the
central line, so it is best to download the file, then edit it with
either Notepad or Word to search for a city close enough to you.

Worldwide predictions, mainly for Brazil and the Azores, but some
cities are in other S. American coutries, and many in the Caribbean:

The data are listed in alphabetical order by city name. In the file
used for these predcitions, the names of the cities start with the
2-letter country code, followed by the city name. For US cities,
the 2-letter state abbreviation follows the city name.
Circumstances
See the notes above for N. America since they apply to this as well.
